Project Description
World's first integrated carbon capture and storage facility on a coal-fired power plant. Groundbreaking clean technology implementation capturing 90% of CO2 emissions for geological storage.
. Beginning with the conceptual study in 2004 as an Engineering Co-op student with Neill & Gunter Consulting Engineers and working on designs for coal conveyor, HVAC and cooling water piping systems - our founder Paul Ekberg rejoined the project during the detailed engineering phase with Stantec Consulting Engineers in 2011 as the Lead Planner / Scheduler for the BD3 Unit Boiler and Auxiliaries Retrofit and Interconnecting Ductwork areas of the project. This included supporting the lead esitmator in development of the capital cost estimate and developing and maintaining a resource loaded schedule for reporting, progress measurement and cost control of a $30M Engineering fee contract for the Engineering, Procurement of the BD3 Retrofit and Owner's Engineering functions for the overall ICCS project.

JKJPM's Role & Implementation Approach
Provided specialized project management support for pioneering clean technology implementation
Coordinated complex integration of carbon capture systems with existing power generation infrastructure
Managed stakeholder engagement across government, environmental, and technical communities
Implemented risk management strategies for first-of-kind technology deployment
Lessons Learned
First-of-kind clean technology projects require extensive testing and optimization periods
Integration of new technology with existing infrastructure presents unique technical and operational challenges
Stakeholder education and engagement is critical for acceptance of innovative environmental technologies
Long-term operational planning must account for technology learning curve and continuous improvement
